UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS
Following the approval of the China’s Ministry of Education, GTIIT offers the following academic Bachelor of Science programs. All programs comply both with Technion-Israel Institute of Technology requirements and the Chinese MoE requirements. Hence, a GTIIT undergraduate will be awarded both a Technion degree and a GTIIT degree and graduate diploma.
Chemical Engineering
1. Program Positioning
The areas entailed in Chemical Engineering (hereinafter referred as “CE”) are extensive, including energy (battery technology, renewable energy, solar energy, etc.), water treatment (desalination, wastewater treatment), polymers, micro-electric, nanotechnology, drug production, and biotechnology, petroleum chemical products, safety, and environmental protection, etc.
The Wolfson Chemical Engineering Faculty of the Technion was founded in 1952 and is the first Chemical Engineering program in Israel, which has had major influences on industries in Israel. The main teaching ideas of this program are to base on the advanced research and teaching management experience of the Wolfson Chemical Engineering Faculty and actively cultivate talents to meet local economical and industrial developments challenges.
Guangdong Province is an influential economic as well as a chemical engineering, energy, and medicine industry province in China, hence an enormous need for high-level research technology people with a chemical engineering background. This program seeks to achieve advanced international standards and is a discipline combining chemical, biochemistry, and engineering tools. The program courses include traditional fundamental chemistry as well as engineering, merged with high-level theory and tools e.g., nanotechnology, biomedical engineering, water desalination technology, and new energy.
By absorbing and utilizing the program development and the talent cultivation experience of the Chemical Engineering Department of the Technion, this program is committed to cultivating high-level engineering scientific and technological talents with a solid knowledge base, broad international vision, and creative thinking. They will be able to make a tremendous contribution to serve the industrial innovation of the eastern Guangdong region and even China as the graduates from the Technion has been doing for Israel’s economic development.
The program conducts cutting-edge research in many research fields which include: 1. Multiphase process engineering; 2. Membrane separation technology; 3. Polymer rheology and processing; 4. Modern catalytic technology; 5. Biotechnology metabolic engineering. The faculty has made remarkable scientific research achievements in related fields. In the past four years, they have published more than 100 papers in the world's top chemical environment journals, and have guided many graduate students.
In 2018, the two disciplines "Chemical Engineering and Technology" and "Environmental Engineering", were both listed as provincial key disciplines, which played an important role in supporting and promoting the construction and development of the study program. In 2021, the CE program has been selected as the provincial-level first-class undergraduate program development site, which reflects the initial results of GTIIT's undergraduate program’s development.
2. Talent-cultivation Goal
The CE program aims to train the high-level engineering scientific and technological talents that can flexibly and comprehensively use basic subject knowledge such as chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics to effectively solve key engineering problems related to R&D, production, and environmental protection in a variety of industries locally and even around the world.
The CE program is dedicated to training students to become highly qualified chemical engineers capable of processing from initial design, production process development, waste gas, and wastewater treatment to product completion. Graduates will be able to work in industries such as energy, environment, materials, semiconductor manufacturing, biomedicine, food, etc., as well as in engineering design departments or government regulatory agencies.
Graduates of this program may choose to pursue further studies in advanced separation engineering, nanotechnology, polymers and plastics, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, chemical process optimization, safety, water and wastewater treatment and management, climate change, energy, etc. Graduates can apply for a master’s degree from GTIIT, Technion, or other domestic and foreign universities, and especially outstanding undergraduates will be able to apply for a doctorate directly.
3. Cultivation Scheme
Following the corresponding program setting in Technion, students in the program are required to complete 157 credits in four years, including program compulsory courses (130.5 credits), program electives (14.5 credits), and general electives (10 credits).
The course combines basic scientific knowledge with a professional foundation and frontier knowledge. Through professional learning, students can use the theory of the basic subjects of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, the formation of mathematical modeling, process simulation, and other aspects of comprehensive ability. They can also effectively solve the key engineering problems involved in the product research and development, production optimization and environmental protection in the process industry of material transformation.
In addition, students must take the ideological and political theory courses and other relevant courses as required by the Chinese Ministry of Education. All courses are taught in English except ideological and political courses and physical education.
4. Course Curriculum
The courses of this study program include basic core courses such as mathematics, physics, and chemistry. And it also contains basic chemical courses such as material balance and energy balance, thermodynamics, and transfer phenomenon, as well as a series of professional comprehensive courses such as process flow and plant design, treatment of specific environmental problems, and application of appropriate processing technology.
Senior students will complete scientific research projects under the guidance of their supervisors, among which many undergraduate students have published academic papers in the world's top journals as the first author. The program has established a joint laboratory with a leading energy company and a biotechnology company in eastern Guangdong in 2021, and set up joint research laboratories in schools and companies at the same time, which provide great convenience for students of the program to directly participate in scientific research activities related to practical applications. It once again reflects the program characteristics of the combination of teaching and research.
The teaching of the program has interdisciplinary characteristics. It contains the content of environmental engineering on top of the chemical technology discipline. Graduates will have the technical ability to reduce water, air, or soil pollution and prevent the deterioration of human settlements.
The program emphasizes lab teaching to enhance students' hands-on practice and the ability to use knowledge to solve practical problems. The teaching hours of lab courses occupy about 40% of the total teaching hours in the 4th to 8th semesters (the total teaching hours of lab and theoretical courses).

5. Faculty Team
The program recruits scientists from around the world who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievements in academia and teaching. There are currently more than 30 faculty and researchers, all of whom are educated in internationally renowned universities, and more than 90% have PhD degrees. The faculty team has remarkable international characteristics. In addition to some teachers dispatched by the Technion, there are also teachers and researchers from the United States, Singapore, Australia, India and other countries. Most of the teachers and researchers have worked in world-class research institutes or universities, such as the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research, the US Department of Energy National Laboratory, the University of Maryland, the University of Hong Kong, etc. At present, the student-teacher ratio is about 7:1, which meets the needs of undergraduate teaching.
6. Teaching Conditions
The program now has 10 teaching and research laboratories, including an advanced separation teaching laboratory, chemical engineering teaching laboratory, environmental engineering laboratory, analytical chemistry laboratory, green catalytical chemistry laboratory, polymer physics laboratory, surface chemistry laboratory, and multiphase process intensification laboratory, etc. These laboratories are equipped with top instruments, which not only satisfy the practical education requirements but also build a high-level and well-adapted platform for innovative technology research.
GTIIT had a consensus about co-building student internship bases with 21 enterprises involved in chemical, pharmaceutical, food, environmental, etc., which can fully meet the internship and practice needs of Chemical Engineering students.

Biotechnology and Food Engineering
The BFE Program (named "Biotechnology" in according to MOE catalog) follows the program of the Biotechnology and Food Engineering Faculty of the Technion. The Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Engineering is one of the few faculties worldwide to incorporate areas of biotechnology and food engineering under one combined degree. The faculty has been providing high-level graduate talents that can join both the biotechnology industry (a relatively young industry) and into the food industry.
In order to train highly skilled engineers in the fields of food and biotechnology, the Program courses cover the content taught by the Technion, providing students' solid foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology, and engineering. Students learn traditional and modern topics in the fields of biotechnology and food engineering through core courses and advanced courses, and are exposed to cutting-edge technologies and research fields, and gain rich practical experience.
In 2018, the discipline "Food Science and Engineering" was selected as the Key Discipline. With the strong support of the high-level university construction plan of Guangdong Province, the development of the discipline has been significantly improved, and at the same time, it has also promoted the improvement of program itself. At the end of 2021, the program was recommended by the Guangdong Education Department as the provincial first-class undergraduate program development site.
The program cultivates engineers and technical professionals in the fields of biotechnology and food engineering. Its graduates are able to work in the fields of biotechnology and food, and to seek employment in institutions related to food, medicine, cosmetics, environmental protection, or in governmental agencies of food, medicine, agriculture, energy, environment, etc.
Graduates will become competitive engineers, adapt to the biotechnology and food industry in Guangdong Province and greater China, and will also be welcomed by top universities in the world for postgraduate programs.
The total credits of the four-year undergraduate program are 162, including 144.5 credits of program core courses, 7.5 credits of program electives and 10 GE credits. The scheme is a combination of basic knowledge and advanced theories, as well as a variety of experimental courses to help students hone their practical skills and participate in research projects.
Students must earn 16 credits of MOE courses. All program courses are taught in English.
Students who meet the degree requirements will be awarded the bachelor's degree in Biotechnology and Food Engineering from the Technion, and a bachelor's degree in Biotechnology from GTIIT.
During the first three semesters, all undergraduate students of the program must complete basic science and engineering courses, focusing on mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. Thereafter, the program offers an interdisciplinary educational plan that includes food engineering, biochemistry, nutrition, molecular biology, biotechnology, and entrepreneurship. Juniors and seniors can take more advanced courses to deepen their expertise and experience, such as Genetics and Advanced Genetic Techniques, Ecological Engineering, Advanced Biomaterials, Agricultural Processing, and relevant research projects. In addition, the program plans to offer other advanced courses such as Tissue Engineering and Synthetic Biology.
The program emphasizes practical lab courses, which take up 30-40% of all course time. All the labs are equipped with the most advanced facilities and equipment to create a high standard of lab teaching environment for students. Please refer to the below undergraduate curriculum for details.
Most of the teachers are from the Technion, and the rest of the teaching and research personnel are recruited globally in accordance with the standards of the Technion. The strength of the faculty team is constantly increasing. All teachers and faculty have rich teaching experience and high academic standards. A considerable number of teachers also have rich experience in industry, education and research. The Program Head has made great achievements in academia, and has been engaged in teaching, scientific research and management for a long time at the Technion. The teachers and faculty have brought unique and novel educational concepts in biotechnology and food engineering, providing an important guarantee for the Program to carry out high-standard and high-demand talent training.
The program has brand new teaching and lab facilities with state-of-the-art equipment that can provide each student with an independent lab experience, including general microbiology, food microbiology, and molecular biology labs that allow for complete microbiology and molecular biology experimental processes, characterization, and safety testing that meet international standards; biochemical and food analysis laboratories that allow for complete biochemical and analytical laboratory workflows with equipment for isolation, detection and identification of food and pharmaceutical ingredients and bioactive substances; and a fermentation and downstream processing laboratory with fully adjustable pilot equipment and downstream processors that can provide innovative hands-on laboratory courses on cell expansion and drug and biologics manufacturing. In addition, a large food pilot plant located on the South Campus is nearing completion. The plant is expected to support multi-unit collaboration that is commonly seen in the food industry.

Materials Science and Engineering
The Materials Science and Engineering (hereinafter referred as “MSE”) program was listed as the Key Discipline in 2018 and the First-class Undergraduate Program Development Site in Guangdong Province in 2020. The MSE-led Provincial Key Laboratory of Materials and Technologies for Energy Conversion was approved as one of the Guangdong R&D platforms in 2021 and can provide research, education, and training services for students.
Based on physics, chemistry and engineering, the program aims to let students understand how processing and composition affect the structure, properties and performance of materials, and is a combination of multidisciplinary knowledge and skills.
Specialized courses cover crystal structure and microstructure analysis, materials processing, electrochemistry, diffusion and phase transitions, kinetics and thermodynamics, and polymer properties, aiming to produce outstanding engineers and technologists who can integrate and lead materials research and development and its application in high-tech industries such as semiconductor manufacturing and biomaterials. Students will participate in collaborative R&D projects with industry and master advanced research methods in materials science and engineering.
Compared with MSE teaching programs in other universities in China, the knowledge structure and content of GTIIT MSE program is more advanced. Examples are: (1) the thrust on advanced courses related to micro and nanoelectronics: "Electronic Material Properties", “Experimental Molecular Electronics” "Conductive Atomic Force Microscopy", and other courses that span the field of microelectronics and nanoelectronics; (2) the profound course content, covering some important points that are usually not included in similar undergraduate courses, but are rather offered in graduate studies.
In addition to the excellent and unique teaching program, the MSE department puts a strong emphasis on research. The research activities cover many of utmost importance for Chinese society, and it will empower the industry of China by developing key technologies and building capable professional engineers. MSE has developed cutting edge research in several fields including i) high performance alloys, ii) novel materials for electronics and energy storage, iii) nuclear materials, iv) functional nanomaterials and biomaterials. In addition, MSE provides a broad range of personal and central laboratories for processing and characterization of materials that are equipped with a wide range of advanced equipment, which are supported by experienced global resources from 5 continents.
Recently the Provincial Key Lab of Energy Conversion Materials and Technology has been authorized by the Guangdong Province Department of Science and Technology. It provides a platform strengthening the research and collaboration worldwide. MSE professors also actively carry out the 5-year research project “Provincial Major Project of Basic and Applied Research of Future Functional Materials under Extreme Conditions” recently awarded by Guangdong Province Department of Science and Technology.
MSE students will participate in R&D projects, many of which are in cooperation with the industry, and master advanced research methods of materials science and engineering. Graduates of the program can be engaged in academic research or get employed in relevant industries. Material engineers may seek employment in industries and development centers of the following applications: electronics and communication; energy generation, conversion and storage; aerospace or vehicle manufacturing; nuclear industry; polymer nanocomposites and plastic materials; and in pharmaceuticals and biomaterials.
The graduate of the program gains the following expertise.
· Master the knowledge of mathematics and natural science, the knowledge of engineering technology, and certain knowledge of economics and management required by the professions in this program field.
· Systematically master the basic theories and knowledge of the materials science and engineering discipline; understand the basic principles of the relationship between materials’ composition, structure, synthesis/production and properties.
· Master the basic knowledge and skills of preparation, performance testing and analysis of various materials involved in the discipline.
· Understand the development status and trends of related disciplines in materials; have a sense of innovation; have basic abilities to improve materials performance and product quality, to develop and study new materials and new crafts, to select and use materials according to engineering projects, etc.
· Develop the skill of innovation and entrepreneurship.
· Have a sense of lifelong learning; able to use modern information technology to acquire related information, new technologies, and new knowledge to constantly improve personal abilities.
· Have a global vision, high-level foreign language proficiency, intercultural communications ability and cooperation ability.
Following the program setting in Technion, MSE - GT students need to complete 160 credits of courses in four years, including compulsory courses (131 credits), elective courses (19 credits), general education courses (10 credits). In addition, 16 credits of moral and political theory courses are requested by the China Ministry of Education. The teaching includes theoretical teaching as well as practical teaching. All courses are taught in English except ideological and political courses and physical education.
Upon completing the studies, the students receive two graduation documents – one from the Technion and the other from GTIIT.

The MSE program has been recruiting worldwide teaching staff and young scientists with excellent professional backgrounds in innovation, research, and teaching.
Apart from some Technion teachers, GTIIT MSE has teachers and researchers from the United States, Germany, Australia, Spain, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan and other countries. Most of the teachers and researchers have worked at world-class universities (such Northwestern University), research institutes (such as the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory) and R&D departments of famous companies (such as GE). The MSE program provided teaching laboratories that are equipped with the world’s leading experimental equipment such as a world-class conductive atomic force microscope or the most advanced electron microscopes. MSE is continuously heavily investing in the equipment of teaching and scientific research with advanced high-level, to help students get involved in scientific research project as early as possible and obtain real scientific research experience. MSE students are required to complete specific experiments in teaching laboratories and advanced research projects under supervision of a faculty member before graduation. Mathematics and Applied Mathematics
(The Technion Degree in "Mathematics with Computer Science" )
1. Program Positioning
The study program Mathematics with Computer Science (MCS) Program has the characteristics of strong foundation of the relevant disciplines and wide application range. The novelty of the program is a combination of high-level education in Mathematics in terms of depths of the courses and their wide scope together with a strong education both theoretical and professional in Computer Science. The program exposes the stronger students to research projects supervised by experienced professors. Students who complete their studies within the prescribed period will be awarded a bachelor's degree from the Technion, as well as a bachelor's degree and a graduation certificate from the Guangdong Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT).
2. Talent-cultivation Goal
By mastering the combination of the disciplines, mathematics and computer science, graduates from the program will have access to a wide range of positions in the high-tech industry, economics (e.g. actuarial science), data science and AI. With this particular combination of Math with CS offered by the program, graduates will be able to master along their work after the graduation up to date developments in the professional world and in particular in the area of Computer Science.
As for further studies, students are welcome by prestigious graduate programs in areas as pure and applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science, Economics, Theoretical Physics, etc.
3. Total Credits for Graduation
The total credits of the 4-year undergraduate program are 147, including 16 credits of moral and political theory courses requested by the China Ministry of Education (17 credits for Cohort 2020 and later cohorts). Students must complete 2 credits of physical education courses during the 4 years of study.

4. Study Years
4 years, students will be awarded the bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics of GTIIT, and the bachelor’s degree in Mathematics with Computer Science from the Technion.
5. Basic Requirements for Talents Cultivation
a. Students will undergo systematic training in mathematical thinking, master the methodologies of mathematical sciences, and possess a solid foundation in mathematics as well as strong mathematical language expression skills.
b. Students will have the preliminary ability to conduct mathematical research or apply mathematical knowledge to solve practical problems.
c. Students will be familiar with the historical overview of mathematics and its wide applications, as well as the latest advancements in contemporary mathematics.
d. Students will master the basic methods of information retrieval, literature search, and the use of modern technology to obtain relevant information.
e. Students will be proficient in the use of computers, achieving a good level of computer literacy, and be aware of the current state and trends in the development of computer science.
f. Adopt a full English teaching model, using English-language original textbooks to cultivate students' English thinking and logical abilities, ensuring they have the equivalent language level required for studying at universities in English-speaking countries. Students will have a certain international perspective and the ability to engage in cross-cultural communication, competition, and cooperation.
6. Graduation Requirements
Students must complete the required credits stipulated by the teaching plan within the prescribed years, obtaining no less than the specified 131 credits (including 109.5 credits for program core courses, 15.5 credits for elective courses, and 6 credits for general education). Additionally, each course must be passed with a minimum grade of 55, and the GPA above 65. Fulfilling the requirement of 16/17 credits for moral and political theory courses, students may be approved for graduation upon review.
7. Basic Information Resources
The program cultivation scheme, syllabus, teaching requirements, assessment criteria, graduation evaluation standard, as well as other fundamental teaching information, are available in the form of brochures, websites, etc.
8. Textbooks and References
The selection of textbooks that reflect international standards, particularly those in foreign languages, is conducive to the stable implementation of bilingual or fully English-medium instruction.

GRADUATE PROGRAMS - MSc/PhD
As a research university, GTIIT aim to attract a large international population of research students. These students will serve as teaching assistants and lead review sessions, which constitute between 20%-25% of typical Technion coursework.
These students will be supervised by GTIIT faculty who hold Technion academic appointments. Masters and PhD degree certificates will be issued by the Technion.
