 National Relaxation Day ... Really?

Mark your calendar! August 15, 2022 is National Relaxation Day. Although I think we need to employ more relaxing activities everyday. This isn't one of the public sanctioned holidays so if you decide to honor this one, your employer will not be reimbursing you for the time off. In researching the validity of the designated National Relaxation Day, I found that Sean Moeller founded it in 1985 as a fourth–grader. It is amazing how the Internet gives us access to this kind of information.

The intent of the National Relaxation Day is to remind you to rest your mind and body from your normal fast paced activities. We have holidays where the whole day is set aside to celebrate an important event and the people who played a part in it.

Being relaxed every day is necessary for your own health and well-being. Perhaps you aren't able to dedicate a full day to being relaxed. What about taking a holiminute once an hour during your work week?

You can practice the I Relax Meditative Movement™ which is our April featured video. Otherwise below is a quick and easy way to relax during a normal workday.

  1. Close your eyes and give them a rest.
  2. Repeat the affirmation, "I Am Relaxed" and notice how your body follows your mind's suggestion.
  3. Perform a body scan. If you notice a tense body part, breathe into it or stretch it out. Repeat "I Am Relaxed" out loud.

As you explore ways to relax, remember that you are the only one responsible for your health and happiness. If your daily routine is so busy, you probably need to schedule a relaxation timeout every day. You are worth it.
