Sonya Renee Taylor: The Body is Not An Apology Movement

Sonya Renee TaylorHave you heard of this movement? I was introduced to it when I was a presenter at the Love is the Key & It Begins with Me conference. Sonya Renee Taylor delivered the keynote address from Australia. She is the Founder, and Radical Executive Officer of The Body is Not An Apology, a digital media and education company promoting radical self-love and body empowerment as the foundational tool for social justice and global transformation.

What a joy to listen to her message! Hence the reason I want to introduce you to her work especially as we think about the New Year. Even if you don' t make any resolutions or set goals, this year can be transformational for you. At Franklin Park Elementary School located in Fort Myers, Florida their January theme is a "New Year, New You." As part of this initiative, I have been invited to share the Meditative Movement™ technique with their students. Are you interested in pursuing a new you? If yes, what do you need to support you in this effort?

For a lot of people, weight is listed on their resolution or goal list. It's been interesting for me because I have lost a significant amount of weight. With that change, I have been exploring my relationship to my new body. It is like my 16–year–old body with the addition of some gray hair and aged skin. When I was in my teens, I began hating my body because it wasn't like everyone else's. My breasts had not developed, and when I started menstruation, it isolated me even more. With the cultural messaging and lack of family and friend communication, I became more insecure and sadder. My already well'established thoughts of " something is wrong with me" were moving out of control. When my healing journey began at the age of 23, I created the Meditative Movement technique to retrain my body and brain. To create a new you, I believe love is the key and each one of us needs to do our part.

Back to Sonya. She is a former National and International poetry slam champion, author of three books, The Body Is Not An Apology: The Power of Radical Self Love (Berrett-Koehler 2018), The Ultimate Puberty Book for Girls: Celebrate Your Body (and Its Changes, Too!) (Callisto Publishing 2018), the poetry collection A Little Truth on Your Shirt (Girlchild Press 2010) and she is co-editor of the forthcoming, International Handbook of Fat Studies (Routledge 2019). As an educator and thought leader she enlightens and inspires organizations, audiences, and individuals from board rooms to prisons, universities to homeless shelters, elementary schools to some of the biggest stages in the world.

Sonya uses the art and craft of the written word to weave a tapestry between our individual experiences and our collective liberation. Her commitment to accessible, honest work can move you toward transformation and any changes you may want to see in your life.

You are invited to explore and see how her message may benefit you. Her books have already been mentioned. She also provides videos such as Bodies As Resistance and When The Shotgun Questions The Black Boy, podcasts, and events that you can participate in from her website.
